Evaporative condenser is an indirect heat exchanger which we usually call air-cooled heat exchanger. The hot medium can be either vapour or liquid that needs to be condensated. The cold medium is usually ambient air or water from cooling system. The heat exchange is done through indirect contact between the two medium.

In the evaporative condensers, the vapour or liquid to be condensated is sent into a tube bundle. The ambient air or cooling water is supplied outside the tubes in a closed circuit to cool down the temperature of the hot medium. The heat of condensation is transferred to the ambient air or cooling water and removed by evaporation of water corresponding to an air stream provided by a fan.

Fins are usually added to the tubes as this construction to increase heat transfer surface. The tube bundle is generally mounted with a slight slope, in order to facilitate the removal of condensate inside the tubes and removal of incondensable gases through the top.
